New and Improved Solís

The New and Improved Solís is a community fan fiction project that anyone can edit, on the condition that you don't undo other peoples' work. Obviously at times there may be need to improve the wording of something to make the project fit together.

Plot

After the defeat of Oscar Espinosa and the Black Hand, the Army of Chaos becomes the new national army for Solís and Rico becomes Solís' de facto ruler. Rico converts the government into an actual republic and begins to prepare for elections in the country by supporting more liberal politicians. He also begins to un-isolate the country from the rest of the world. Solís became the poorest nation in South America after the crippling civil war.

First elections

After the war, Rico Rodriguez became the leader of Solís, under the name of Presidente da República Popular de Solís (President of Solís' People's Republic). His immediate plans for elections were halted by the necessity for rebuilding: three major cities, Quya, Aguaclara and El Molino, had been completely destroyed, the capital Nueva Voz had been heavily bombed and several villages had been burned down by the retreating Black Hand. He tasked Mira Morales, which had studied political science outside of the island and had some experience in small scale management, with rebuilding the destroyed houses and helping the suffering population, a lengthy operation which only concluded in 2020.

In the mean time, Rodriguez and his main collaborators had created the base for the new government, which was inspired by the western ones and had two main chambers of decision, a prime minister and a President of the Republic. Rodriguez refused to be elected President, leaving the seat to its close friend and collaborator Mira.

The first election was held in 2021, after six months of preparation. Voting polls were in every major city, and so many people from the countryside either couldn't vote at all or had to travel several miles. The main candidates were the Solíno National Pride Party (SNPP), led by the war veteran Marco Mendes, the Solíno Socialist Party (SSP), led by the human rights activist and field surgeon Albino Zapatero, and the Democratic Communist Party of Solís (DCPS), led by Esperanza Pena. The SSP gained a lot of popularity due to the activities in major bombed cities by Zapatero, and won by a striking 56,82%; the SNPP came second with an equally good 34.19%, and last came the DCPS with 8.99%.

Zapatero immediately started reforms of the farming system, tried to crack down the remnants of the mafia and used his funds to build schools, hospitals and firefighting stations. He managed to raise the population's conditions, and redistributed the elite's wealth; he also promoted trials for the Espinoza collaborators, the old government officials, generals and businessmen. He also held trials for the war criminals: under his leadership, both the Army of Chaos generals who led the bombing of Aguaclara and the POW executions in Vista Futura and the Black Hand ones who led the mass murders of civilians in Costa Consuelo were either executed or jailed. Still, Zapatero and his socialist policies couldn't bring Solís' economy to a higher level, the fight with the guerrilla was still ongoing, and poverty was still rampant; he was forced to resign and was replaced with Mendes.

Mendes took power in 2021 and inherited the crisis of the Solíno Guerrilla War, taking the matter into his own hands. It was him who led the raid on the El Abismo outpost, and he also used a lot of resources to destroy the jungle and the forests, thus destroying many of the enemy outposts; death of several men from the Solíno Liberation Army lead to a temporary peace for the civilians.

Since the the SSP was first elected, Rodriguez has not interfered with Solíno government politics and has left the nation to develop by itself, in its own way. He told Mira that he was "not gonna get in the way, unless [his] dictator removal sense starts tingling". This means that he does not intend to interfere with the political developments in Solís, unless a dictatorship arises.
